‘Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form.
“Come in,” she said,
“I’ll give you shelter from the storm.”

why is it necessary to try on a saint’s shoes. by this action what
would the supposed “new” shoe wearer achieve?

Trying on someone else’s shoes is a metaphor for understanding things on their terms (hence the saying not to judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes). Therefore, trying on the shoes of a saint is to look at the world through his or her eyes, to try and see things in a different light than you may be used to.
